The Hornby 'Grange' is one of the easiest locos around to convert to DCC. Remove of the body commences by undoing the screw under the fall-plate:
With this screw removed, the chassis can be prised from the body, starting at the cab end. You will need to push the chassis backwards under the body to release a locating lug under the smokebox.
This loco is fitted with an NMRA 8 pin socket (indicated in blue below) and is supplied with a blanking plug. The blanking plug must be removed and can be levered out gently with a small screw driver or pulled by hand. Pin 1 is marked and therefore a the decoder plug (in this case a TCS M1-UK) must be fitted with the orange wire connected to Pin 1. The decoder (indicated in red) can then sit above the drive system.
I didn't worry about removing the capacitor on this loco as it appears not to affect DCC operation.
Once the decoder is fitted,
testing the loco
and setting the address can then commence.
